The product parting line is the trace left on the product at the meeting area of each component of the mold. Product parting lines include main parting lines and parting lines for other components. Main parting line: It is the line left on the product after separating the front(cavity) and back(core) molds, which is generally the largest profile line of the product. See below:
The product parting line generally affects the design of the product draft angle. Above the parting line, the draft angle of the product should be bigger than 90 degrees upwards, and below the parting line, the draft angle of the product should be bigger than 90 degrees downwards, otherwise it is an undercut and the part cannot be released from mold. So the designer must consider how to place the parting line in order to add the appropriate draft angle to the product. This is one of the challenge that designers usually met. And as mold manufacturer, we often meet problematic draft angle designs.
On some external surfaces, sometimes need slides, which will form some slide parting lines (component parting lines) on the outer surface. For example, Slide PL 1(image 2) below, the line (purple) designed in this way will leave a pinch line on the surface of the product, but if it is designed as slide PL 3(image 3), follow this slide hole, so that the line is on outside of this hole, and will be hidden slide parting line very well.
Slide PL 1: This design is core slide design , the design is the most economical design for tool, but slide parting line will be left on outside of the part.
Slide PL 2: This design is cavity slide design, the slide parting line is nice but the tool cost is higher.
Also the hole to main parting line distance is 8mm now. if less than 3mm, it will have thin steel from the slide hole to the PL steel surface on cavity, then caused steel breaking. So when we do part design, we need to consider this issue.

Core side slide leaving slide PL on outside of the part. since the slide undercut is too close to the red main parting line(around 3MM), if we design to cavity slide just form out the square hole, then it will cause thin steel on tool, so customer have to accept the outside slide PL on part.
When designing products, we must consider the parting line left by various constructions, whether this parting line has any influence on the mold design, mold life and appearance. Such product design is the most perfect design.
Because different products have different parting lines, a capable product designer have to master this technology, then a good product design can be designed for mold.
